Department of Insurance
North Dakota operates under a prior approval rate filing system for most insurance lines, with some commercial lines being use-and-file. The state merged its Securities Department into the Insurance Department effective July 1, 2025, creating a unified regulatory body overseeing both industries. The Insurance Commissioner is an elected official who serves as the chief insurance regulator and now also oversees securities regulation in the state.
